Horizontal Directional Drilling
-
Norther Courier Pipeline: Dover River
Product Pipe: 42"
Max Ream Size: 60"
Length: 1184m
Date: 2015
The spring thaw caused the ice roads to become unsable. A special benotnite based fluid was circulated through the bore to hold it open over the course of 8 months before drilling could resume.
-
Northern Courier Pipeline: Athabasca River
2016 Northwest Trenchless Project of the Year
Product Pipe: 42"
Length: 2195m
Date: 2015
This corssing set the record for a HDD of this size in Canada
-
McCoughlin Point Wastewater Treatment Plant
Product Pipe: 42"
Length: 940m
Date: 2021
Extremely had rock made this project very difficult. The fluid system was designed to reduce wear on the tooling and maximize ROPs.
-
Imperial Oil: Waterdown to Finch: Hidden Lakes
2022 Trenchless Technology: Project of the Year Runner Up
Product Pipe: 12"
Ream Size: 24"
Length: 3531m
Date: 2021
Record setting length for an HDD for a 12" pipe installation. Due to the length, friction loss and carrying capcity of the fluid were vital in the sucess of the bore. 1 of 37 sucessfully completed HDDs on this project.
-
Vancouver Airport Fuel Line
Product Pipe: 14"
Longest: 780m | 18 urban & semi-urban HDD crossings
Date: 2021
High risk of settlement of surrounding structures and strict limitations due to the urban envrionment.
-
Pembina: Athabasca River
Product Pipe: 30" / 22"
Length: 1181m / 1116m Parallel Crossings
Date: 2021
Very heterogeneous conditions throughout the bore path along with a large elevation change between exti and etnry. Oilsands, limestone, Clearwater shale and clay till formations made up the bore path.
-
Trans Mountain Expansion Project
Product Pipe: 36"
Longest: 2256m | Major Crossings: 40
Date: 2020-Present
Highly varied geologies, envrionmental restrictions, and unforseeable events created many challenges on this project. Successfully completed
-
Alberta Products Pipe Line
Product Pipe: 12"
Longest: 633m | Crossings: 21
Date: 2018-2019
These crossings involved traversing multiple creeks, rivers, and transporation routes. High plastic clays and shale zones were present throughout the project.
-
Keyera: KAPS
Product Pipe: 12"/16"
Longest: 2256m | Crossings: 40
Date: 2020-Present
These crossings involved very high plastic clay tills with multiple sections of highly reactive and fractured shale. Highly fractured shale and sandstone made circulation loss a major problem. Utilizing our chemical clay inhibitors, the crossings were completed without incident.
-
ATCO:
Product Pipe: 12"/16"
Longest: 2256m | Crossings: 40
Date: 2020-Present
Multiple crossings in the Calgary area in both high traffic and urban sections along with more rural crossings. Highly unconsolidated fill zones were present within the urban right of ways. This made bore stability challenging. High plastic clays and coal were also present along these bore paths.
Direct Steerable Pipe Thrusting (DSPT)
-
Trans Mountain Expansion Project
Longest: 662m | 11 Crossings
Date: 2020-2022
Varied geologies and major elevations changes made designing and implementing these crossings difficult. In addtion, due to hte size of machines being used it was necessary to remove the larger casing around the product pipe and inject a novel bentonite stabilizing fluid into the void space.
-
Costal Gas Link
Longest: 680m | 4 Crossings
Date: 2020-2022
Highly abrasive and porous unconsolidated geologies requied a specially designed slurry and lubricating fluid for sucessfully traversing these crossings. Heterogenous geologies made up a large portion of the project requiring a versitile system capable of adpating to the changing conditions.
Pipe Jacking
-
City of Calgary: Rangeview Sanitary Trunk: Dr 1
TAC Project of the Year Under 100 Million:
Longest: 926m | AVN 1500 | 3 Drives
Date: 2020
This drive was completed with high plastic clay till containing mutliple sand seams. The annular fluid used, reduced jacking forces greatly allowing for the quick advancement of the tunnel.
-
Trans Mountain Expansion Project: Jacko Lake
Longest: 1312m | AVN 2000 | 4 Drives
Date: 2022-2023
Long drives through highly abrasive bedrock with sand/clay till pockets. For sucessful drives a high quality lubricating fluid is required to minimzing jacking forces.
-
Costal Gas Link: Morice River
Length: 886m | AVN 1800 | 1 Drive
Date: 2022-2023
Long drive with both unknown and very heterogeneous geologies to be encountered. The final length of the drive involved a uphill climb with heavy tunnel segments. Strict environmental resutrictions were put on the design of the fluid systems resulting in alternative formualtions being used to ensure the sucess of the project.
-
City of Edmonton: Malcom Tweedle & Edith Rogers Dry Pond & Sanitary Upgrade
Trenchless Technology Project of the Year 2023
Date: 2020-2021
Highly reactive clay and shale geologies were adressed to eliminate cutter clogging, mud solids content and prevent squeezing on the tunnel segments.
